President Trump ripped former special counsel Jack Smith, calling him “a real sleazebag” after it was revealed that the FBI obtained phone records of eight Republican senators and one House lawmaker as part of Mr. Smith’s probe into the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the Capitol.
“Deranged Jack Smith caught with his hand in the cookie jar. A real sleazebag,” Mr. Trump posted on Truth Social.
A newly uncovered FBI document released Monday by the Senate Republicans revealed the bureau spied on the lawmakers’ phones as part of its Arctic Frost investigation, which led to Mr. Smith’s indictment of Mr. Trump on charges related to election interference.
Arctic Frost was launched in 2022 to probe the events leading up to the Jan. 6 protest. The FBI secretly obtained call records for the nine GOP lawmakers from Jan. 4, 2021, through three days later.
Sen. Charles E. Grassley, Iowa Republican, said at a Monday press conference that the obtaining of phone records was motivated purely by partisan politics.
“There’s no predicate that we can find for the solicitation of these telephone records, which I think emphasizes the political weaponization that was behind all this effort, and we’re still getting more information,” Mr. Grassley told reporters.
