President Trump announced Monday that he would be pulling the United States from the Paris Climate Accord shortly after being sworn into office.
“President Trump will withdraw from the Paris Climate Accord,” said a White House email laying out his first priorities.
The withdrawal is listed under his “make America affordable and energy dominant again” agenda.
Mr. Trump made a similar announcement in 2017, pulling the U.S. from the agreement that former President Barack Obama signed in 2015. The climate accord is an international treaty that is aimed at combating climate change. Nearly 200 parties have signed the agreement.
However, the U.S. didn’t officially leave the agreement until 2020. Former President Joe Biden rejoined the agreement in 2021.
Mr. Trump has laid out his plans for the US to become more energy-dominant, including his pledge to “drill, baby, drill.”
During his inaugural speech Monday, he said allowing new oil and gas drilling will bring down energy prices and allow the country to fill its reserves while exporting energy.
“It is that liquid gold under our feet that will help to do it,” Mr. Trump said.
He also said he would be terminating emissions rules from Mr. Biden, known as the “electric vehicle mandate.”
