Former Trump aide Steve Bannon pleaded guilty Tuesday to engaging in a scheme to defraud fundraisers who contributed to an online effort to build a border wall.
In exchange, Bannon will receive a sentence that does not include jail time. The three-year conditional discharge does, however, prohibit Bannon from leading a charity or nonprofit during that time.
Prosecutors said Bannon, a Trump ally who once served in a White House role, raised money through a “We Build the Wall” fundraiser but redirected funds away from the wall project.
He was initially charged in federal court but Mr. Trump pardoned him, leaving his legal jeopardy in the state courts.
He pleaded guilty to one count of a scheme to defraud.
Bannon was previously convicted of contempt of Congress for defying a subpoena from the House select committee that investigated the riot at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. He served a four-month prison sentence last year.
Bannon, a former investment banker, rose to prominence through his work at the conservative Breitbart news site.
He served as a strategist in the White House in 2017 before his departure due to a falling out with Mr. Trump. However, Bannon remains a loyal supporter and uses his podcast to promote the former president.
