Globe-trotting television host Rick Steves wants you to keep on travelin’ — and vote for Vice President Kamala Harris.
Mr. Steves, known for his PBS travel series in Europe, endorsed the Democrat for president in a video filmed and posted on X from France.
He cited his international perspective as one reason he opposed former President Donald Trump, Ms. Harris’ Republican rival.
“As a traveler, I’m both a proud American and a citizen of the world — and I’ve got a few thoughts on this coming election,” Mr. Steves wrote late Thursday in a message with his video. “The world needs not American isolation, but American leadership. Not the chaos of Trump, but the stability of @KamalaHarris.”
Mr. Steves urged people to register to vote. He said that, ultimately, how they vote is up to them.
“But if you believe, as I do, in the importance of nations working together constructively, the stakes are really high … and the best candidate is clear,” Mr. Steves wrote.
Mr. Steves, 69, is the longtime host of “Rick Steves’ Europe.” He is a champion of legalizing cannabis and endorsed Democrats Hillary Clinton and Joseph R. Biden in the last two elections.
It is unclear whether his stamp of approval for Ms. Harris will move the polls.
Surveys show a tight race, with Ms. Harris leading by low single digits in national polling and the race statistically tied in many swing states.
Another celebrity, pop megastar Taylor Swift, gobbled up headlines this week by endorsing Ms. Harris.
Mr. Trump dismissed the endorsement, saying Ms. Swift would suffer in the marketplace for leaning into the political sphere.
Mr. Steves, in his endorsement, said the election “is deeper than partisanship.”
“It’s far more than Republican vs. Democrat. In the future, big challenges like pandemics, refugees and climate change will be blind to borders,” he wrote. “They’ll be everyone’s problem and only solved by working together as a family of nations.”
