Prince George’s County police said they arrested and charged two men with murder Friday who are accused of killing a toddler and wounding his mother who were caught in a shootout in Langley Park.

Authorities said they took Israel Fuentes, Jr., 33, and Johnny Alejandro Turcios, 28, both of Lewisdale, into custody Friday in connection to the death of 2-year-old Jeremy Poou-Caceres.

Police said the boy’s mother, who wasn’t identified, suffered non-life-threatening injuries after she and her son were trapped in the crossfire of a Thursday evening shooting.

That day, Mr. Fuentes and Mr. Turcios were trading gunfire with another group of people around 5:35 p.m. when both victims were hit, police said.

“Those groups shot at each other Thursday evening near where the mother and child were walking,” police said in a press release. “It appears the two victims were unintended targets and struck by stray bullets.”

Jeremy died in a hospital shortly after he was shot, police said.

Investigative materials and witness testimonies led to the arrest of the two suspects, according to police.

“We hope these two arrests provide some comfort to Jeremy’s grieving family,” Assistant Chief Vernon Hale said. “This investigation is far from over. We will not stop until everyone involved in this murder is in custody.”

Mr. Fuentes and Mr. Turcios are facing first-degree murder charges, among other offenses.

Court records show Mr. Fuentes is being held without bond and is scheduled to appear in court Monday.

Mr. Turcios’ charges are not published on the state’s judicial records.
