A 3-year-old in Indiana grabbed a gun and shot a man who turned out to be wanted for murder in Illinois, authorities said.
Police in Lafayette, Indiana, said they took Trayshaun Smith, 23, into custody Thursday after he received treatment for a non-life-threatening gunshot wound. Mr. Smith had an active arrest warrant in neighboring Cook County, Illinois.
Authorities said the toddler fired only one bullet but managed to strike both Mr. Smith and the child’s 21-year-old mother, Jalynn Artis. Ms. Artis was not seriously injured.
Police didn’t share how the child gained access to the gun or what prompted the child to fire the weapon.
Mr. Smith and Ms. Artis are friends, according to police.
