Time magazine on Tuesday announced layoffs that affect 15% of its staff.

The publication said the cuts involve 30 jobs as it joins other media outlets downsizing. The firings will affect several areas at the magazine, including the editorial and sales departments.

The news outlet’s union said many of the firings come from the Time for Kids division.

NewsGuild, the union representing several fired Time workers, slammed the decision as part of a strategy among media managers to prioritize executive compensation over good journalism.

Time said the decision was necessary for the company to remain competitive and profitable.

The cuts at Time come during a turbulent few months for legacy media organizations. Most recently, the Los Angeles Times announced massive layoffs compromising nearly 20% of its newsroom. Other smaller publications like Vice News, BuzzFeed and Jezebel experienced layoffs and closures in 2023.

Declining advertising revenue and rising labor costs have even affected massive organizations like The Washington Post and The New York Times. Labor unions have reacted with predictable outrage. Amid the L.A. Times layoffs, around 400 Conde Nast workers staged a protest walkout Tuesday.
