Thieves stole 100,000 eggs, worth about $40,000, after breaking into a distribution trailer for an egg supplier in Pennsylvania over the weekend.
The organic eggs were stolen from the rear of a trailer at a Pete & Gerry’s egg supply facility in Greencastle at about 8:40 p.m. Saturday, Pennsylvania State Police said in a report.
The company told WHP-TV that it is working with authorities.
“We take this matter seriously and are committed to resolving it as quickly as possible. Due to the ongoing investigation, we cannot comment any further on this matter,” Pete & Gerry’s said.
The theft comes as prices for eggs are rising due to an outbreak of bird flu. A dozen large brown organic eggs laid by free-range hens sold for $6.29 last week, with the same category of eggs laid by pasture-raised hens costing about $9.69, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
