President Donald Trump announced that the federal government will go back to using plastic straws.

“I will be signing an Executive Order next week ending the ridiculous Biden push for Paper Straws, which don’t work. BACK TO PLASTIC!,” Mr. Trump posted Friday on Truth Social.

The Biden administration had announced plans in July to phase out use of single-use plastics by the federal government for food, packaging and events by 2027, according to The New York Times.

Other Biden White House efforts included a 2021 executive order requiring agencies to “minimize waste, including the generation of wastes requiring treatment and disposal” and to prioritize and buy “products that contain recycled content, are biobased, or are energy and water efficient.”

That executive order, overturned by an executive order from Mr. Trump on Jan. 20, led to an Interior Department order to “reduce the procurement, sale and distribution of single-use plastic products and packaging with a goal of phasing out single-use plastic products on Department-managed lands by 2032.”

On Saturday, Mr. Trump posted on Truth Social that “Crooked Joe’s MANDATE, ‘NO PLASTIC STRAWS, ONLY PAPER,’ IS DEAD! Enjoy your next drink without a straw that disgustingly dissolves in your mouth!!!”

Mr. Trump has been agitated by paper straws for years. During the 2020 presidential campaign, his team sold Trump-branded plastic straws, according to National Public Radio.

At a rally in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, in September 2020, Mr. Trump said, “Has anybody tried those paper straws? They’re not working too good, right? They want to ban straws. … The new straw, it’s made of paper, it disintegrates as you drink it. If you have a nice tie like this tie, this would have no chance. By the time you get finished, the straw is totally disintegrated.”
