Prosecutors in Michigan charged a teenage girl with felony assault over the weekend after the student allegedly knocked down a teacher by throwing a chair at the back of the adult’s head.
The Genesee County Prosecutor’s Office brought the two felony charges against the 15-year-old girl, who is accused of tossing the metal chair at Flint’s Southwestern Classical Academy on Sept. 28.
A viral video of the incident appeared to show the teacher trying to defuse an argument between two female students.
That’s when one of the girls grabs a chair and flings it, striking the teacher in the back of the head.
The woman immediately falls to the floor. She was taken to the hospital, where she was released later that same day.
Flint Police Chief Terence Green said a school resource officer was called in shortly after and saw the teacher lying on the ground with injuries to her head.
Both students were arrested over the incident. Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton later authorized charges against the girl who threw the chair.
“We are deeply saddened by the unfortunate incident that transpired, where a teacher was subject to a distressing attack by a scholar,” Kevelin Jones, superintendent for Flint Community Schools, said in a statement. “I want to emphasize that this act of violence is unacceptable and goes against the values we hold dear in our educational community.”
