Police in central New York arrested a teenage boy over the weekend and charged him in the shooting of a security guard who was trying to break up a fight outside a high school football game Saturday.

Utica Police said they charged the 16-year-old boy with attempted murder after a security guard was shot in the back of the head outside a Proctor High School football game.

The guard, who wasn’t identified, is in critical but stable condition according to police.

Authorities said a fight broke out in Proctor High’s parking lot around 4:10 p.m., moments after the school’s football game against Binghamton High School had ended.

Two security guards tried to diffuse the brawl when police said the accused teen fired off two gunshots and injured one of the guards.

Police said the suspected shooter turned himself in later that day.

The 16-year-old suspect is also facing various gun charges. The boy is not a Proctor High student, and is instead enrolled in an “alternative education program.”

Authorities said they hope to charge the teen as an adult. The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
