Los Angeles police said an innocent driver was killed in a car crash Wednesday when a group of teenage burglary suspects caused the collision while speeding away from pursuing officers.

Authorities said the suspects, who are between the ages of 15 and 19, T-boned the driver at about 2:30 a.m. near the intersection of West Imperial Highway and South Broadway in South Los Angeles.

Police pronounced the driver dead at the scene. Another driver was hit during the collision but suffered only minor injuries.

Three suspects were taken into custody after the crash, according to police.

“Here it is now, a family’s going to be without a loved one for Thanksgiving,” Los Angeles Police Department Sgt. Keith Mott said near the crash site. “It’s frustrating and it’s heartbreaking. It’s heartbreaking because an innocent person’s life was taken.”

Authorities said they were originally called to a home break-in in the Rancho Palos Verdes neighborhood at about 1:30 a.m.

The suspects jumped into a Lexus SUV and black Porsche when responding officers arrived on the scene and sped off, prompting a police chase.

The burglars drove onto the 110 Freeway where police said the suspects turned off their lights.

California Highway Patrol picked up the pursuit at this time while the suspects exceeded speeds of 100 mph.

The Porsche exited the highway while police said officers continued to pursue the Lexus SUV.

CHP officers tried to use spike strips to stop the fleeing Lexus, but the car exited the highway at a high rate of speed and caused the fatal crash.
