The newest member of NATO is sending more than $10 million in humanitarian aid to Ukraine to help Kyiv meet its needs ahead of winter.

Russia’s invasion of its neighbor continues to have devastating consequences for Ukrainians, Swedish government officials said Tuesday.

Moscow is targeting civilian infrastructure and has disrupted major sections of Ukraine’s heating and electricity supply. The results will become more dire the colder the weather gets, Swedish officials acknowledged.

“We’re now assisting the Ukrainian civilian population with things that we take for granted here in Sweden — heating, water, sanitation and medicines — so that they can survive the winter,” said Gudrun Brunegard, a spokeswoman for the Christian Democrats party, which makes up part of Sweden’s governing coalition.

“Sweden’s assistance will also go to mine clearance, which unfortunately will be an impending problem for a long time to come,” said Benjamin Dousa, Sweden’s minister for International Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade. “The assistance will also go to addressing sexual violence and reproductive health needs and efforts to combat gender-based violence.”
