A student at William Floyd Middle School in the Long Island town of Moriches, New York, handed out THC-filled gummies to 12 classmates this week, sending 11 of them to the hospital.
THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol, is the main psychoactive chemical found in marijuana.
The student, who hasn’t been named by school officials or law enforcement, gave out the edibles Monday, the William Floyd School District said on Facebook. The 12th student who didn’t go to the hospital was released to a parent’s custody.
Police and emergency medical personnel responded at about 10:10 a.m. to help the students, all of whom are 13 to 14 years old, the Suffolk County Police Department told the New York Post.
The school district didn’t specify any symptoms the students suffered but said, “We are grateful to our first responders for their quick response, thankful that the students will be treated and hopeful that they will recover quickly.”
The police aren’t filing criminal charges, SCPD told WCBS-TV. Instead, the school district will take disciplinary action.
“While we cannot discuss student discipline publicly due to privacy laws, we take this matter seriously and there will be appropriate consequences. We will continue to build upon our anti-drug programs and also continue to host grade-level assemblies highlighting the dangers of all drug use, including edible marijuana,” WFSD told the New York CBS affiliate.
