A college baseball player in Texas was seriously injured Saturday after police said he was hit by a stray bullet in the middle of a game.
Texarkana police said two suspects believed to be involved in the incident turned themselves in.
Authorities said 18-year-old Matthew Delaney, a baseball player for Texas A&M University-Texarkana, was not in uniform and was standing near the bullpen of George Dobson Field at Spring Lake Park when he was struck by the bullet around 5:30 p.m. Saturday.
The athlete was taken to a hospital for surgery. A spokesman for the university told CNN on Monday that Mr. Delaney was upgraded to stable condition in the hospital’s ICU.
“We think it’s important to note that he has a number of serious injuries, as would be expected with this type of trauma,” the spokesman said. “He has made slight improvements daily but still has significant injuries and complications to overcome.”
Police later issued arrest warrants for 17-year-old Kamauri Butler and 20-year-old Demarco Banks after connecting the athlete’s gunshot wound to an unrelated shooting in a neighborhood just west of the park.
Authorities determined that Kamauri and Mr. Banks got into an argument and opened fire on each other. One of the errant rounds traveled about 400 yards and hit the victim. Both suspects fled the area Saturday before police arrived.
Mr. Banks turned himself in to police overnight Sunday and was booked in Bi-State Jail. He’s being held on a $100,000 bond.
Kamauri turned himself in overnight Monday. He’s also booked in Bi-State Jail.
The game was called off after the shooting.
Texarkana sits 180 miles northeast of Dallas on the border between Texas and Arkansas.
