The U.S. government is warning Americans worldwide to be on alert following violent protests in the Middle East amid the Israel-Hamas war.

On Thursday, the State Department issued a Worldwide Caution Security Alert for citizens overseas to “exercise increased caution” due to the potential for violence at various locations, including U.S. embassies and consulates.

The State Department last week announced a security alert for Americans in Israel, the West Bank and the Gaza Strip following the Oct. 7 attack by Hamas terrorists that led to the death of 1,400 people, mostly civilians, and the abduction of hundreds more.

“The situation in Israel is still unpredictable. Mortar and rocket fire may take place without warning,” U.S. officials said in a statement.

The State Department said Americans overseas should be vigilant in locations frequented by tourists and enroll in the government’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program to receive information and alerts. The program will help locate someone if an emergency arises, officials said.
