State Department buying $400 million worth of armored electric vehicles, originally listed as Teslas

The State Department released its procurement forecast for 2025, including its plans to buy $400 million worth of armored electric vehicles.
The department’s spreadsheet says the money is meant for an indefinite quantity of the cars to be delivered over an indefinite period.
While the document doesn’t specify the brand, earlier versions said the money was earmarked for “Armored Tesla,” according to Drop Site News.
On Thursday, Tesla CEO Elon Musk denied that the procurement was for his company’s cars, writing on X, which he also owns, “I’m pretty sure Tesla isn’t getting $400M. No one mentioned it to me, at least.”
Prior to the revision that removed the brand name on Wednesday, the line mentioning the armored electric vehicles was last changed on Dec. 13.
Mr. Musk indirectly pointed to this earlier revision date in a callout of MSNBC anchor Rachel Maddow on X.
In a segment, Ms. Maddow addressed the State Department’s plan to buy Teslas and called it “self-dealing” due to Mr. Musk’s role in the Trump administration. Tesla investor Sawyer Merritt called out Ms. Maddow’s omission that the procurement list had been changed to include the Tesla vehicles during the Biden administration.
Mr. Musk then quoted Mr. Merritt’s post: “Hey @maddow, why the lie?”
In addition to his role as a special government employee with the Department of Government Efficiency, Mr. Musk donated hundreds of millions of dollars to political action committees that backed Donald Trump and other Republican candidates during the 2024 campaign, according to Federal Election Commission filings.
