D.C. police said a staffer for Sen. Katie Britt was robbed at gunpoint Thursday night in Northeast.

Authorities said the robbery took place around 8:30 p.m. Thursday in the 1200 block of E Street NE.

A scheduler for Mrs. Britt, Alabama Republican, was walking to her building when a man approached her, put a gun in her face and said “Give me your purse and keys,” according to police.

The staffer complied and handed over her belongings.

“It is infuriating and completely unacceptable that an American who is on Capitol Hill to serve her country cannot safely walk the streets of Washington, D.C. at 8:30 at night because of the out-of-control crime in this city,” Mrs. Britt said in a statement about the robbery.

She also pointed out the District’s troubles with violent crime, which are driven by year-over-year increases in homicides (up 34%), robberies (up 68%) and carjackings (up 108%).

Capitol Hill hasn’t been immune from the crime wave that has seen a 39% increase in violent offenses so far this year.

Rep. Henry Cuellar, Texas Democrat, was carjacked at gunpoint earlier this month. He was unharmed in the incident, and his vehicle and belongings were later recovered.

A staffer for Sen. Rand Paul, Kentucky Republican, was the victim of a random stabbing in March, when he was attacked by a man who had just been released from prison.

Rep. Angie Craig, Minnesota Democrat, was assaulted inside her apartment building in February by a man with 12 prior convictions.
