The British band Sports Team was robbed of gear and other belongings out of the group’s tour van by gun-wielding suspects in the San Francisco Bay area Tuesday.
“Just been robbed at gun point 10 minutes into the US tour,” the ban wrote on social media, posting a video of the incident. “Stopped for coffee. Man runs in saying some guys are smashing into a van. … In all seriousness pretty shocking how resigned everyone seemed to be to it. ‘It happens’. 9am at some petrol station Starbucks. Wild.”
Band members attempted to stop the stealing in progress until one of the suspects took out a gun.
“Natural reaction, you sprint towards it and try to stop it, and immediately [one of the robbers] pulls a gun. He pulls a gun, he sort of points it at our tour manager Lauren, there’s another guy loading stuff out and a third guy in a getaway car,” singer and frontman Alex Rice told Sky News.
The theft took place in Vallejo, California, and the suspects took cameras, laptops, Nintendo Switch game systems, suitcases full of clothing, passports and documents, according to the BBC.
Mr. Rice told Sky News that “the most immediate concern for us is passports, to be honest. Three of us had our passports taken. It’s a ’try to get to the consulate and get that sorted for Christmas’ sort of situation.”
Sports Team’s instruments, however, were not stolen, and the band was able to play a gig in Sacramento later on Tuesday. They return to the Bay Area for another show Saturday.
“We’re gonna keep playing. We’ve got nothing against the Bay Area. We think it’s great here - but it’s sad that it’s kind of got to this sort of place with gun violence,” Mr. Rice told the BBC.
