House Speaker Mike Johnson said Tuesday he is still willing to work with Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene despite her “ridiculous tirade” against him when she pushed for a vote to oust him from his leadership role.
“Oh good grief,” the Louisiana Republican, clearly exasperated, said when asked during a local radio interview if he had made up with Ms. Greene after she unsuccessfully tried to remove him as speaker earlier this month.
Speaking on The Morning Show with Mike and McCarty on 710 KEEL in Shreveport, Mr. Johnson said he immediately tried to bury the hatchet with Ms. Greene after the House overwhelmingly voted to kill her motion to oust him from the speakership, 359-43.
“I don’t carry grudges. I don’t keep a record of wrongs,” Mr. Johnson said. “I went up to her after her ridiculous tirade and said, ‘You know what, we still got to work together, Marjorie.’”
Ms. Greene told GOP colleagues that the speaker is “serving the Democrats and the Biden administration and helping them achieve their policies that are destroying our country.”
Mr. Johnson said he reminded Ms. Greene that Republicans only have a one-vote margin to pass party-line legislation with their threadbare majority, and urged her to refocus her angst.
“How about training some of that energy against the Democrats?” he said.
While expressing optimism that the internal GOP conflict would eventually subside, Mr. Johnson joked about having to help his members work through their issues.
“This is all going to work out,” he said. “I spend half of my day as speaker of the House and the other half as a mental health counselor.”
