Speaker Mike Johnson will not appoint Rep. Mike Turner to chair the House Select Intelligence Committee in the new Congress, The Washington Times confirmed with an inside source.
Mr. Turner, Ohio Republican, had been the top Republican on the committee, a post chosen by the speaker, since the beginning of 2022, and tapped by then-Speaker Kevin McCarthy, California Republican.
He was removed as the panel’s chair and off the committee altogether, because as a rank-and-file member, his term on the panel had expired.
House rules restrict membership on the intel committee to no more than eight years, or no more four than congresses, in a period of six successive congresses.
This rule does not apply to the chair. Mr. Turner joined the Intelligence Committee in 2015.
It is unknown who Mr. Johnson will choose to replace Mr. Turner, and there are several open slots on the GOP side of the committee because of member retirements including Reps. Elise Stefanik of New York and Mike Waltz of Florida being selected for Trump administration posts.
In 2024, Mr. Johnson appointed Republican Reps. Scott Perry of Pennsylvania and Ronny Jackson of Texas to the committee.
