A battery fire broke out in a mechanical room at the National Museum of American History Thursday, closing the museum for the day, but no one was injured.
The fire broke out in a battery bank below street level at around 10:30 a.m., the D.C. Fire and EMS Department said on social media.
The fire was quickly extinguished, museum staff wrote on social media, with no injuries and no damage to exhibits or items displayed at the museum.
The batteries involved were not the lithium-ion variety, D.C. firefighters told WJLA-TV. The first responders cut the power, put out the fire and cleared the smoke out of the building.
Hazmat crews also went to the museum to clean up the remains of the batteries, Smithsonian officials told WJLA-TV.
Museum officials decided to close the facility for the day, and it reopened to the public Friday.
