A small plane crash-landed on County Highway 81 in the Twin Cities metropolitan area, hitting a car. Both the pilot and the driver of the car were injured.

On Tuesday at about 10:30 a.m. local time, a single-engine plane landed on the road after reporting engine problems, the Federal Aviation Administration wrote in an incident notice.

The crash landing happened close to Crystal Airport in Crystal, Minnesota.

“I don’t think I have power. I can’t make it to the runway,” the pilot told air traffic control in recordings obtained by WCCO-TV.

In the process of landing, the plane hit power lines and then struck a car traveling southbound.

The 32-year-old man driving the car and the 23-year-old man flying the plane were both injured in the collision, with the driver going to the hospital for minor injuries and the pilot being treated at the scene, the Brooklyn Park Police Department said.

“The fact that [the pilot] impacted one vehicle and was able to put the aircraft down … is probably a testament to his skills as a pilot,” Brooklyn Park Fire Department Chief Shawn Conway said, according to WCCO-TV.

Neither man was identified by authorities.

In addition to the FAA, the National Transportation Safety Board is also investigating the incident.
