A single-engine propeller plane crashed at a windmill farm four miles south of Christoval, Texas, killing the pilot and the passenger.
The crash happened around noon local time Thursday near the San Angelo Regional Airport, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. Neither victim has been publicly identified.
The plane had left Jacksonville earlier in the morning, according to WTLV-TV. The FAA said the plane was approaching the airport when it “crashed under unknown circumstances.”
The pilot had contacted air traffic control before the crash, telling them, “We overshot it. … We got a problem!” according to KIDY-TV. The nature of the problem was not specified.
Another pilot following the aircraft that crashed told local news site San Angelo Live that there were strong winds coming from the east, which sped up the plane as it turned before the crash.
The crash site was “located approximately four miles south of Christoval on a ranch,” Texas Department of Public Safety Sgt. Justin Baker said, KIDY-TV reported. The ranch is a windmill farm off of U.S. Route 277, according to San Angelo Live.
The National Transportation Safety Board is leading the investigation into the crash, the FAA said.
