A gunman shot a person to death in base housing at Fort Eisenhower near Augusta, Georgia, and was apprehended.
The shooting happened Saturday morning, causing a lockdown at the U.S. Army installation. Base officials said in a Facebook post that public identification of the victim is pending for the notification of their loved ones. The identity of the accused gunman was also not disclosed.
Officials lifted the base’s lockdown at around 9:45 a.m. and said the incident appears to be isolated. The Army’s Criminal Investigation Division, other federal agencies and state law enforcement are looking into the shooting.
“Fort Eisenhower is actively supporting the victim’s family, and assistance will be available to anyone impacted by this tragedy. The safety of our residents and personnel remains our primary concern,” officials wrote on Facebook.
Although the lockdown was lifted, activities at the base relating to the Army-Navy football game later Saturday were canceled.
