Two American tourists were injured, one seriously, in a shark attack while swimming in the Bimini island chain in the Bahamas last week.

The shark attacked the two women Friday, the Royal Bahamas Police Force said in a release on social media. Both were treated at a clinic in the Bimini islands before being airlifted.

Bahamian police did not specify what species of shark was involved in the attack. The two victims believe it was a bull shark.

Rileigh Decker, 20, was in the Bahamas with her friend Summer Layman, 24. Ms. Decker told NBC News Tuesday that she “felt something nudge my leg” shortly after entering the water.

“I was like, ’Summer, what was that?’ And she was like, ’Don’t scare me like that.’ And probably about two minutes later, we were right by the ladder. I felt my leg get tugged down, and I immediately knew I was bit by a shark,” Ms. Decker told NBC News.

Ms. Decker suffered an injury to her right leg while Ms. Layman was injured on one of her feet.

Since record-keeping on such incidents began, there have been 34 unprovoked shark attacks against people in Bahamian waters, according to the Florida Museum of Natural History’s International Shark Attack File.
