Police in San Antonio, Texas, said seven officers were shot Wednesday night during an hourslong standoff with a man, who had barricaded himself and was later found dead by authorities.
San Antonio Police Chief William McManus said originally four officers were shot by the suspect, who was described as a man in his 40s. The chief later released a video statement saying a total of seven officers had been wounded.
Chief McManus said the initial four officers were being treated for non-life-threatening injuries. Police didn’t share the severity of the three other officers’ injuries.
“The first officer who arrived was shot, and six officers subsequent to that were shot as well,” Chief McManus said in a video posted on Facebook. “The suspect barricaded himself inside the apartment for several hours. At the end of the event, the suspect was found to be deceased.”
Authorities said the standoff began around 8:30 p.m. Wednesday after a possible suicide attempt was reported at an apartment complex on the city’s north side.
SWAT teams eventually breached the apartment unit and found the man dead from bullet wounds. Chief McManus said it was unclear if the suspect took his own life or was killed by police gunfire.
The chief said the suspect had been charged with three crimes on Saturday, including two assault offenses and one for driving while intoxicated. The man was out on bond when the barricade situation unfolded.
