Senators will receive a security briefing Tuesday from the sergeant-at-arms and U.S. Capitol Police in the wake of the assassination of former Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark Hortman.

The briefing was requested by Senate Majority Leader John Thune, South Dakota Republican, and Minority Leader Charles Schumer, New York Democrat.

Mr. Schumer said on social media he spoke with Capitol Police about increasing security for Sens. Amy Klobuchar and Tina Smith, Minnesota Democrats, as he recently did for Sen. Alex Padilla, California Democrat who was detained briefly when he tried to confront Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noel.

“I thank the Sergeant at Arms and the Capitol Police for increasing security for all three,” he said.

Mr. Padilla found himself in the middle of a political firestorm recently after being wrestled to the ground and handcuffed by federal authorities, after he pushed through the security detail of Ms. Noem during her press conference, while loudly asking questions of her.

Minnesota state Sen. John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette Hoffman, were also shot multiple times by the alleged gunman, Vance Boelter, 57, who was captured by authorities Sunday night after law enforcement conducted a manhunt.
