The Senate on Wednesday confirmed Eric Scott Turner to lead the Housing and Urban Development Department.

The vote was 55-44, with just two Democrats joining all Republicans in support.

Mr. Turner, a 52-year-old former NFL player, served as executive director of the White House Opportunity and Revitalization Council during President Trump’s first term. He’s also a professional mentor, pastor and former Texas House member.

Republicans cited Mr. Turner’s work during the first Trump administration leading the Opportunity Zone program, which helps revitalize distressed communities, among the reasons he’s qualified to lead a department in charge of addressing America’s housing needs.

“It’s a big job, but Scott Turner has the grit, the determination and passion to get it done,” said Senate Majority Leader John Thune, South Dakota Republican.

During his confirmation hearing, Mr. Turner said illegal immigration added a “great burden” to efforts to ensure Americans have affordable housing as he promised to uphold the law for who qualifies for government assistance.

Only people legally in the country can receive HUD subsidies, though Mr. Trump’s first administration tried unsuccessfully to limit their eligibility if they live with people who may not have approved immigration status.

“We do not like to tear up families, but we have an obligation to serve the American people,” Mr. Turner said.
