NextImg:Sen. Tom Cotton: New security considerations needed for Americans targeted by Iran

Sen. Tom Cotton said Sunday it’s time to take a new look at providing additional protection to Americans targeted by Iran.

The escalating conflict between Israel and Iran has put U.S. officials on edge. The Islamic Republic’s efforts to hunt victims inside America have extended from top officials to critics of Iran, according to the Department of Justice.

Mr. Cotton, chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, told CBS News that a new review of the security details for U.S. officials pursued by Iran is warranted.

“We should probably revisit the threat that all persons face — remember, President Trump faced assassination threats from Iran as well — in this moment of tension, to ensure that no one who worked for President Trump in the first term or works for him now could be the target of Iranian agents,” the Arkansas Republican said.

Mr. Trump has publicly urged Israel and Iran to pursue peace. The president said Sunday that Israel and Iran should and will make a deal — and he warned Iran against attacking America in “any way, shape or form.”

The Justice Department accused the Iranian regime of plotting to assassinate Mr. Trump last year, and prosecutors charged an Iran-based operative over his participation in alleged murder-for-hire plots against Americans. Iran has previously disputed the charges.

Officials who served in Mr. Trump’s first administration and faced threats from Iran have seen their government security diminished in recent years.

Former President Joseph R. Biden declined to provide government security to Robert O’Brien, previously a national security adviser to Mr. Trump.

Earlier this year, Mr. Trump removed certain protections for various officials, including John Bolton, who was fired from serving as national security adviser during the president’s first term.

U.S. Secret Service protection for Mr. O’Brien and Mr. Bolton after they left office cost more than $12 million in a nearly one-year timeframe, according to CBS’ “60 Minutes.”

The costly security included 24-hour protection from agents assigned to cover the duo’s homes and offices and their domestic and foreign travel.

Threats from Iran span the full gamut of potential harms from abductions and assassinations to hacking schemes.

In 2021, the Justice Department accused Iranian operatives of a kidnapping plot against a human rights activist.

In 2022, Iran’s supreme leader displayed an animated video on his website that depicted the assassination of Mr. Trump.

Last year, the U.S. intelligence community accused the Iranian government of a hacking operation aimed at Mr. Trump’s team.

And U.S. officials sounded the alarm on Iranian efforts to stoke violence during the transition from the Biden administration to Mr. Trump’s second administration.
