Sen. Markwayne Mullin threw cold water Sunday on the prospect of President Trump seeking a third White House term.

Mr. Trump and some of his most loyal supporters have floated the idea of him sticking around past 2028.

Mr. Mullin, Oklahoma Republican, said that would not happen because of the 22nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which limits presidents to two terms in office.

“No. I’m not changing the Constitution, first of all, unless the American people choose to do that,” the Oklahoma Republican said on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”

Mr. Mullin said Mr. Trump is playing around.

“It was a joke, and people need to take it as a joke,” the senator said.

Mr. Trump once again teased the idea last week.

“Should I run again? You tell me,” Mr. Trump said last week at a Black History Month event at the White House.

Former Trump adviser Steve Bannon also played up the idea this weekend at the annual Conservative Political Action Conference.

“The future of MAGA is Donald Trump,” Mr. Bannon said, revving up the crowd. “We want Trump in ’28. That’s what they can’t stand. A man like Trump comes along only once or twice in the country’s history.”

“We want Trump!” Mr. Bannon said.
