Sen. J.D. Vance of Ohio said Monday he won’t “lobby” to be former President Donald Trump’s running mate, noting plenty of other good choices are available.
Mr. Vance said he has not spoken to Mr. Trump about joining the ticket, though he added the Trump campaign requested documents from him as part of the vetting process.
“It’s ultimately Donald Trump’s decision; there are a lot of talented people to pick from,” Mr. Vance said on “Fox & Friends.” “If he asks me to serve, I will certainly do it.”
“If it comes to me, great, but it’s not something I’m going to lobby for,” the Republican senator added. “I don’t think that’s the right attitude to take towards it. Maybe Trump respects that, maybe he doesn’t, but that’s ultimately his call.”
Mr. Vance is on the short list to become Mr. Trump’s vice presidential choice ahead of the GOP nomination in July.
Other top contenders include Sens. Marco Rubio of Florida, Tim Scott of South Carolina and Tom Cotton of Arkansas, Gov. Doug Burgum of North Dakota and Rep. Elise Stefanik of New York.
Mr. Vance was critical of Mr. Trump during the real estate mogul’s initial political rise. Now the senator says he was wrong and fully supports him.
Mr. Vance attended Mr. Trump’s business-record trial in New York as part of a rotating entourage of supporters.
The senator contends that Mr. Trump’s conviction didn’t turn off supporters. Instead, it resulted in hundreds of millions of dollars in donations to the campaign.
“The numbers are shocking,” Mr. Vance said. “People are pissed off, excuse my language.”
