Sen.-elect Angela Alsobrooks formally resigned her position as Prince George’s County executive Monday so she can begin her term on Capitol Hill on Jan. 3.

Her departure means county Chief Administrative Officer Tara Jackson will serve as acting county executive until a special election can be held in 2025 to fill the permanent role.

Ms. Alsobrooks, a Democrat, defeated former Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan on Election Day, keeping the seat vacated by Sen. Ben Cardin in the blue column even as Democrats lost the Senate majority to the GOP.

In her resignation letter, Ms. Alsobrooks said serving the county “has been the honor of my lifetime, and I am deeply proud of all we have accomplished together.”

Under county code, a special primary election for the county executive must be held within 45 to 100 days, and the special general election should be held between 40 and 60 days after the primary.

Among those signaling interest in the post are Aisha Braveboy, the state’s attorney for Prince George’s County; Prince George’s County Council member Calvin Hawkins; and county Council Chair Jolene Ivey, according to press reports.
