The U.S. Coast Guard on Tuesday paused its search for a missing man after a boating accident off North Carolina’s Oregon Inlet. The boatsman had been declared overdue Sunday.
Chad Dunn, 36, had departed Virginia Beach for a marina in Manteo, North Carolina, along with Charlie Griffin, a boat captain and cast member of the National Geographic Channel’s reality series “Wicked Tuna: Outer Banks.”
Mr. Griffin, 65, and his dog, Leila, were found dead Monday, and the search for Mr. Dunn was soon suspended, the Coast Guard said in a release Tuesday.
The Coast Guard didn’t say what the nature of the boating accident was. No mention was made of whether the boat Mr. Dunn and Mr. Griffin were on was found.
Before ending the hunt for Mr. Dunn, the Coast Guard searched around 400 miles by air, sea and land over the course of two days.
The incident is being investigated by the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, the Coast Guard said.
Mr. Griffin’s Facebook page Reels of Fortune, named after his boat, posted Monday that “It is with the deepest sadness we report that Charlie Griffin and his beloved dog, Leila, have passed away in a boating accident. … Please keep family and friends in your thoughts and prayers. We will forever remember Griff!”
Mr. Griffin appeared on seasons two through five of “Wicked Tuna: Outer Banks.”
“Charlie was known to all as a spirited fisherman with a big heart. We join Charlie’s family, fellow cast members and friends in mourning his untimely loss,” National Geographic and production company Pilgrim Media Group wrote in a joint statement on the “Wicked Tuna” Facebook page.
