Police in San Antonio, Texas, arrested a carjacking suspect who was injured Thursday in a shootout with the car owner after discovering the stolen vehicle had a manual transmission.
Authorities said the suspect, who was not identified, was arrested after calling emergency services for a bullet graze wound to the head.
Police said the suspect originally told of being injured in a car accident, but officers soon realized the injuries occurred in the shootout during the attempted stick-up.
The suspect was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and charged in connection to the incident.
The attempted carjacking took place around 2:45 a.m. Thursday, when two suspects approached two victims at gunpoint as they walked to their car outside a bar. The victims complied and handed over the keys.
But the suspects drove only a few feet before they bailed out of the car because they couldn’t drive the manual transmission.
Police said one of the robbers opened fire on the victims as they went back to their car.
One of the victims returned fire and caused the grazing injury when the bullet went through the headrest of the thiefs’ getaway car, according to authorities. The getaway car was left behind at the scene of the shooting.
