A sailor who left California for Oahu in December and who was declared missing after being more than two weeks overdue landed safely in the islands over the weekend.

Noel Rubio, 60, left Long Beach on Dec. 28 and had been due to land in Kaneohe, Hawaii, on Jan. 18.

On Friday, with Mr. Rubio more than two weeks overdue, the U.S. Coast Guard put out a notice asking fellow mariners for help finding him and his 32-foot sloop, the Malulani.

Mr. Rubio only had a radio on board for communication, making reaching and finding him difficult. On Saturday, he landed safely in Hawaii, the U.S. Coast Guard said in an update Monday.

The Coast Guard did not specify where in Hawaii Mr. Rubio made landfall.

Mr. Rubio’s tardiness was caused by his journey going slower than expected.

“His estimated arrival time to reach his destination was delayed due to a slower transit time than anticipated. Though this case has a happy ending, it’s a reminder that mariners should be prepared for all possible conditions and have multiple means of communication to reach out,” Coast Guard spokesperson Matt Masaschi told the San Francisco news site SFGate.

The Coast Guard did not say what caused Mr. Rubio’s trip to go slower.
