Hunter Biden will be indicted in California, according to news reports Thursday evening.
CBS News reported that Special Counsel David Weiss will file nine federal charges, including “failure to file and pay taxes, evasion of assessment and filing a false or fraudulent tax return.”
Mr. Weiss has been using a federal grand jury in Los Angeles to gather evidence of possible criminal tax charges against Hunter Biden, Fox News reported.
President Biden is traveling to Southern California on Friday for the weekend, a trip that includes campaign fundraising for his reelection bid. The president’s son has claimed residence in California for some years.
Hunter Biden also is facing possible contempt of Congress action next week.
House Republicans said they will vote to hold him in contempt if he does not show up for a deposition behind closed doors about his father’s role in the family’s business deals.
Oversight and Accountability Committee Chairman James Comer and Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan said the president’s son is compelled to appear for the deposition under a subpoena issued on Nov. 8.
Hunter Biden has so far refused to provide a closed-door deposition and, through lawyer Abbe Lowell, has offered instead to appear at a public hearing.
“The immediate question is whether this leak [about a new indictment] will be used to kick over the table in Congress,” said Jonathan Turley, a legal analyst who teaches at George Washington University, on social media.
“Hunter was holding a bad hand with a real threat of contempt if he failed to appear for the deposition.”
