Some popular Mother’s Day gifts will be cheaper online this year as inflation eases, a consumer research firm has found.
The top 10 best sellers in Amazon’s U.S. marketplace for Sunday’s holiday saw an average year-over-year price drop of 1.6% from April 2022 to last month, market researcher Pattern reported.
Digital picture frames, the fourth most-demanded product on Amazon’s U.S. marketplace last year, saw the sharpest price drop. The average sticker price of a digital frame fell by 11%, from $127.71 last April to $113.75 last month, the company found in a composite price average of the most popular items in each gift category.
“Anyone doing last-minute Mother’s Day shopping shouldn’t worry too much about inflation raining on mom’s parade,” Hamilton Noel, a data scientist for Pattern, told The Washington Times. “The most popular Mother’s Day gifts, such as foot massagers, have actually dipped in price over the last year.”
The company found that the average price of a foot massager, last year’s top-selling gift for the holiday, fell by 5.64% from $135.25 to $127.62 over the same period. Other items whose prices have cooled slightly since last year include neck massagers (3.63% cheaper), gardening tools (a 3% drop) and makeup kits (down by 2%).
The average price of women’s shoes, the second most popular Mother’s Day gift last year, did not change from last year to this year: $24.88.
Other gifts have seen slight price increases.
Pattern found that the average price of scented candles, last year’s seventh-biggest seller, increased by nearly 5% from $18.37 last year to $19.25 this year.
And the average price of a kitchen gadget, number three on last year’s best-seller list, ticked up 1.83% from $21.51 to $21.90.
Smaller average price increases occurred for back massagers (1.27%) and women’s clothing (1.24%), the report said.
