Former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley on Wednesday became the latest Democrat to fall victim to a tricky line of questions asking him to define what a woman is.
Mr. O’Malley, who recently resigned as head of the Social Security Administration and is now running to be chairman of the Democratic National Committee, was appearing before Congress to testify on telework policies when Rep. Nancy Mace tried to nail him down on the woman question.
Ms. Mace, South Carolina Republican, led into her questions by saying the Democratic Party “just can’t stop losing elections” because of stances on transgender rights.
“Can you, a candidate to be a chair of the Democrat Party, define what a woman is for me today?” Ms. Mace demanded.
“Oh yes,” replied Mr. O’Malley.
Ms. Mace: “What is a woman?”
Mr. O’Malley: “You’re asking me to define what a woman is?”
Ms. Mace: “Yes.”
Mr. O’Malley: “I’m talking to a woman right now, a distinguished woman, elected representative.”
Ms. Mace: “What is a woman?”
Mr. O’Malley: “I think you’re kind of denigrating the purpose of this [hearing].”
“He cannot define what a woman is,” Ms. Mace concluded. “And you expect the people of this country to follow your lead?”
