A District of Columbia judge ruled Monday that 13- and 14-year-old girls were guilty of murder in the beating of an elderly, disabled man in the northwest part of the city last year.
D.C. Superior Court Judge Kendra Briggs said the two offenders were part of five juvenile girls who fatally attacked 64-year-old Reginald Brown in October 2023 near Georgia Avenue Northwest.
“Mr. Brown was murdered because these girls were bored, and they went out looking for someone to beat up on a Tuesday night,” Judge Briggs said while delivering her verdict.
The three other defendants in the case pleaded guilty to various charges. One of the girls, who is 16, testified against the younger teens who were convicted Monday.
According to court documents, Brown was being roughed up by an unknown man in a blue coat when the five girls — between the ages of 12-15 — came upon the assault.
The girls asked if they could join in, then helped the unknown man chase Brown down an alley. A medical examiner testified Brown died from an internal brain bleed triggered by repeated blows to the head.
Brown was suffering from cancer and had multiple fingers removed from both of his hands due to past medical issues.
The 13-year-old girl will return to court for her sentencing on Dec. 4, while the 14-year-old will be back in court on Dec. 18.
