Tensions boiled over outside a Los Angeles-area school board meeting Tuesday when two groups of protesters came to blows ahead of the board’s vote on recognizing June as Pride month.

Three people were arrested after a brawl erupted between pro-LGBTQ demonstrators and another group of demonstrators, mostly parents, who want a say about when their children learn of LGBTQ issues in the classroom, according to KTLA television.

Multiple reports indicated that the fight involved Armenian-American parents and members of Antifa, who were wearing medical masks and head coverings during the protest. People in the crowd of parents wore shirts that said “Leave our kids alone.”

Glendale police broke up the melee and gave a dispersal order for the roughly 500-person crowd around 6:15 p.m.

“While most of the protest was peaceful, a small group of individuals engaged in behavior deemed unsafe and a risk to public safety,” police said in a statement.

Among the charges for those arrested were for using pepper spray and obstructing officers, according to KABC-TV.

The fracas caused the school board to delay its business, but the board went on to adopt the resolution declaring June as Pride Month for the fifth year in a row.

A statement from Glendale Unified School District Superintendent Vivian Ekchian said the school system is only following the state’s curriculum.

“We have absolutely no agenda,” she told KABC. “We are not in the business of converting anyone’s child.”
