Several hundred pro-Palestinian protesters sat down in the streets of Washington to prevent President Biden’s motorcade from reaching the U.S. Capital for his State of the Union speech Thursday.
Demonstrators flashed signs demanding “Ceasefire Now” while others said “Biden’s legacy is genocide” and “Stop arming Israel,” according to photos posted to social media.
The protesters, who wore black shirts emblazoned with slogans calling on Mr. Biden to hold Israel accountable for the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, sat in the street and demonstrated along Pennsylvania Ave, which is the main route between the White House and Capitol.
They succeeded in delaying Mr. Biden’s arrival for his address to a joint session of Congress.
The demonstration included a projection of Mr. Biden’s face shown across the National Gallery of Art. The images included the captions “Genocide Joe” and “Biden’s legacy is genocide.”
Other pro-Palestinian protesters demonstrated outside of Capitol Hill bar and restaurant Bullfeathers and chanted at Hill staffers gathered there, according to reports.
Protesters angry that Mr. Biden has sent aid to Israel and not directly called for a ceasefire in Gaza have dogged him for months.
Last month, a group of pro-Palestinian protesters shut down the hotel where Mr. Biden was staying in San Francisco, chanting, “Genocide Joe Must Go.”
