NextImg:Powerball jackpot climbs to $1.4 billion after latest drawing fails to produce winner

After Wednesday’s Powerball drawing failed to produce a winner, the lottery’s jackpot rose to an estimated $1.4 billion.

The winning numbers on Wednesday were 9, 35, 54, 63 and 64 in that order, with the red Powerball being 1. However, no players had a ticket that exactly matched, so the jackpot will continue to gather steam leading up to the next drawing Saturday.

Like Wednesday’s $1.2 billion jackpot, the bumped-up sum would be the third-largest prize in Powerball history if won. With the approximately $200 million increase, however, Saturday’s jackpot could become the fifth-largest prize in U.S. lottery history, Powerball said in a release.

At its current estimated sum, the jackpot is surpassed only by a $1.537 Mega Millions jackpot won in October 2018, a $1.586 billion Powerball prize won in January 2016, a $1.602 billion Mega Millions prize won in August 2023 and a $2.04 billion Powerball prize won in November 2022.

The next drawing on Saturday will be the 34th consecutive drawing since the last time a jackpot was won, a $1.08 billion ticket purchased in California and drawn on July 19. Powerball notes that this is the first time two of its back-to-back jackpot cycles have passed the $1 billion mark.

If a player wins Saturday, the person will get to choose between a $643.7 million lump sum or a smaller immediate sum followed by 29 annual payments, each 5% larger than the last.

Each Powerball play is $2, and tickets can be purchased in 45 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The lottery is not available in Alabama, Alaska, Hawaii, Nevada and Utah.
