Utah citizens can no longer enter Pornhub after the company cut off admission to the site in protest of a new proof-of-age law.
Utahns realized the change Monday. Site visitors were greeted with a lengthy message explaining why they were blocked.
“As you may know, your elected officials in Utah are requiring us to verify your age before allowing you access to our website,” the message reads. “While safety and compliance are at the forefront of our mission, giving your ID card every time you want to visit an adult platform is not the most effective solution to protecting our users and, in fact, will put children and your privacy at risk.”
The message suggested users contact their elected representatives and ask for more robust solutions to safety.
The law that requires adult websites to use age-verification systems, Senate Bill 287, passed unanimously last year. The bill makes users submit a digital version of their state-issued ID to a third-party verification system before they can access adult content. The law is part of a broader legislative push to stop children from viewing explicit content.
The bill raised concerns among privacy advocates who said that forcing users to give companies their private information is a serious concern.
Pornhub has battled Utah before on regulation. The company previously protested an order from the state Legislature that required the site to display a warning message before users entered the site. The company initially called the move unconstitutional but, eventually, Pornhub and several other adult websites complied with the order.
