The body found in a suitcase floating in Lake Merritt in California on Halloween has been identified, the Oakland Police Department said Wednesday as they search for clues as to how the man got there.
Authorities identified the victim as Gabriel Gomez Raymundo, 23, and are now offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in the homicide.
Volunteers cleaning up the lake found Raymundo, who had multiple injuries and wounds.
“I wasn’t shocked, but I was surprised it was a body in there,” Kevin Shomo, one of the people who found the suitcase, told KTVU-TV.
Raymundo was from Guatemala, had been living in America for eight years and appeared to have been homeless, authorities told The Mercury News.
The police case update Wednesday did not provide any new information on how long the suitcase had been in the water when it was found, or on how long Raymundo had been dead.
