A small airplane crashed into the roof of a house in Newberg, Oregon, leaving two of the plane’s occupants dead and another injured, fire and rescue officials said. The people inside the house got out safely.

Callers reported seeing the plane spiraling toward the ground and crashing just before 7 p.m. local time on Tuesday.

When firefighters with Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue arrived, they found the plane had crashed through the roof of a house, coming to rest partially in the home and partially in the house’s backyard, they said in a statement posted on Facebook.

One of the plane’s occupants was pronounced dead on scene, and another was airlifted to a trauma hospital in Portland, the officials said. A further search of the plane turned up the third passenger, who was also pronounced dead at the scene, they added.

Officials did not identify the three aboard the plane.

While initial searches of the home found no one there, later interviews with the homeowners found that the people inside the house at the time of the crash got out safely with no injuries, the fire and rescue officials said.

The plane was from the Hillsboro Aero Academy in Hillsboro, Oregon, according to KPTV-TV. The flight training school has not yet publicly commented on the crash.

The Newberg-Dundee Police Department is now working with the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration to determine what happened, fire and rescue officials said.
