A single-engine plane crashed Tuesday night near a shopping center in Plano, Texas, killing the pilot and igniting an unoccupied car.
The Plano Police Department did not name the deceased pilot of the Mooney M20 plane and reported no other injuries or building damage as a result of the plane crash.
“Thankfully the plane did not land on or collide with anything. However, the fire resulting from the crash did involve an unoccupied parked vehicle,” Plano Fire-Rescue Lt. Daniel Daly said, according to NBC News.
Witnesses to the crash said the plane was flying erratically right before it happened.
“The plane made a turn like he was going up but didn’t look right,” witness Shawn Anderson told CNN. By the time Mr. Anderson was able to look back behind him as he drove, the plane had already crashed in front of a local diner, he said.
The incident is now being investigated by both the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board, police said.
The crash occurred not far from the public Air Park-Dallas Airport in Plano, which is a suburb of Dallas, but authorities did not say where the crashed plane took off from or where it might have been heading.
