The first domino just dropped in the Senate.
Sen. Peter Welch of Vermont on Wednesday evening became the first Democratic senator to call on President Biden to end his re-election campaign in the wake of the disastrous debate last month.
“For the good of the country, I’m calling on President Biden to withdraw from the race,” he wrote in an op-ed in the Washington Post.
Mr. Welch said that he understood Mr. Biden’s desire to run and a belief that having beaten President Trump once, he’s the man to do it again.
Mr. Welch’s column went through a litany of Mr. Trump’s awfulness from his point of view.
“But the national conversation is focused on President Biden’s age and capacity,” he said.
The Vermont senator said of Mr. Biden that “only he can change” that fact, by leaving the race.
“We have asked President Biden to do so much for so many for so long. It has required unmatched selflessness and courage. We need him to put us first, as he has done before. I urge him to do it now,” he concluded.
