A newly released video of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi from Jan. 6, 2021, shows her saying she takes “responsibility” for the confusion surrounding law enforcement’s response to the demonstration at the Capitol.
A 40-second video posted on X by the House Administration’s Subcommittee on Oversight shows Ms. Pelosi, California Democrat, talking exasperatedly to her chief of staff, Terri McCullough, as they are being evacuated from Capitol Hill.
“We have responsibility, Terri. We did not have any accountability for what was going on there. And we should have,” Ms. Pelosi says in the video.
“This is ridiculous. You’re going to ask me in the middle of the thing when they’ve already breached the inaugural stuff that, should we call the Capitol Police? I mean the National Guard? Why weren’t the National Guard there to begin with?” she said.
Ms. McCullough is heard saying Capitol security did think it had “sufficient resources” to handle the situation.
“They clearly didn’t know, and I take responsibility for not having them just prepared for more,” Ms. Pelosi responds.
Ms. Pelosi also said, according to Fox News, “It’s stupid that we should be in a situation like this, because they thought they had what — they thought these people would act civilized? They thought these people would give a damn? What is it that is missing here in terms of anticipation? They give us a piece of paper that says walk through the tunnel, don’t walk outside. That’s your preparation?”
The video was shot by Ms. Pelosi’s daughter Alexandra Pelosi and was handed over by HBO to Congress as requested by Republicans.
In an X post, Rep. Barry Loudermilk, chairman of the oversight subcommittee, bashed the defunk Jan. 6 Select Committee for “chasing political narratives and using Hollywood producers for their ‘investigation.’”
Mr. Loudermilk, Georgia Republican, said of Ms. Pelosi, “Her admission of responsibility directly contradicts their own narrative.”
Pelosi spokesman Aaron Bennett said the “cherry-picked out-of-context clips don’t change” anything.
“Numerous independent fact-checkers have confirmed that Speaker Pelosi did not plan her own assassination,” he wrote on X.
“Three years later, House Republicans are still trying to whitewash January 6th. It’s shameful, unpatriotic & pathetic,” he added.
