A woman died in the District on Monday night after she was hit by a semi-trailer and then, after getting dislodged from under the truck, by a Chevrolet Suburban.
The Metropolitan Police Department identified the dead woman as Sierra Nicole Smith, 39, of no fixed address. Some time before 9:32 p.m. Monday, the semi-trailer was traveling eastbound in the 1600 block of New York Avenue Northeast when Ms. Smith entered the roadway.
The police said that Ms. Smith stumbled and fell, leaving her in the path of the truck, which then hit her. The driver of the semi-trailer kept going while she was pinned underneath.
Ms. Smith was eventually dislodged in the 2800 block of New York Avenue Northeast. When she came out from under the semi-trailer, she was hit by the silver 2007 Chevrolet Suburban, which had been driving behind the truck, MPD said.
An unnamed law enforcement source told WRC-TV that Ms. Smith was impaired at the time of the incident.
The semi-trailer involved was taking a tank that had been used in the Army’s 250th anniversary parade on the National Mall to a railyard in Jessup, Maryland, according to an Army document cited by USA Today.
Both drivers stayed at the scene, and D.C. Fire and Emergency Services came out and attempted to save Ms. Smith’s life before declaring her dead. The police said that the incident is still under investigation, though no charges were mentioned against either driver.
